Storming the court in basketball is one of the cool, yet embarrassing things in sports. I get that that sentence makes no sense, but there is a time and place for storming the court. My simple rule is that if you are an elite program you NEVER rush the court. You don’t need to. This is the equivalent of Barry Sanders scoring a touchdown and just handing the ball to an official like he’s been there before. You are better than that. You expect to win. If you are a little guy (not a strong program), go for it. TCU rushed the court after knocking off Kansas this week. Good for them. Even Kansas had to understand that. At the time TCU was winless in its new conference and knocked off an elite program. Plus on the national scale they are basically irrelevant. Get them little Horned Frogs out on the hardwood. But last night Illinois stormed the court after dumping Indiana. No. No. No. You are better than that, Illinois. I know they are a rival. I know they were #1 in the country. You made them look bigger (and yourself smaller) by storming the court. You were ranked earlier this year. If you think you are a big boy program then act like a Man. Think Chris Carter of the Vikings catching a pass and signaling first down. He looked stupid, didn’t he? Well…wearing all that Purple didn’t
help. But be a pro. Know you are elite and get your butt back to the huddle for the next play. Michigan looked great NOT storming the court when they knocked off Ohio State the other night. True, Michigan came into the game ranked higher, but they stayed in their seats like they should. I thought Indiana embarrassed themselves by rushing it last year after beating Kentucky. I thought they were Indiana, not Indiana State…
In my opinion these are some of the programs that should NEVER storm the court under any
circumstance:
Arizona
Connecticut
Duke
Florida
Indiana
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisville
Michigan
Michigan State
North Carolina
Ohio State
Syracuse
Texas
UCLA
Of course, I believe Marquette and Wisconsin also should never resort to that, but they are a tick under these other programs on a national level. That is in no way to take away from what they have accomplished in any way. There are other teams that could easily be included (Butler, Gonzaga, Creighton, Memphis, etc because they dominate their conferences) but I wanted to touch on the major programs that should think Barry Sanders and not Jermichael Finley. If your team is not on the list and you want to be, then stay in your seat. If you
know you are little, go big and storm away.
Who did I miss?
