Brewers GM Doug Melvin joined the show on Tuesday to talk about his teams’ addition of pitcher Kyle Lohse.
Melvin said that with a young staff the move made sense. “I just think in the end we felt if we could have somebody with experience of Kyle’s resume it would help our pitching.” Although he was quick to point out performance this spring from the staff didn’t influence the decision. “I don’t think we forced to because of our spring training pitching, I know a lot of people have been commenting, but we’ve given up the 2nd fewest hits in all of spring training.”
He added that having to give up a 1st round pick (17th overall to St. Louis) as compensation in the deal also hurts. “That was the one thing, but in the end we feel that he can help us better with this year and we can worry about the out years later on.”
Lohse will start for the Brewers on Thursday then “After that session we’ll make a determination where he would pitch in the rotation.”
