David Moulton, of Southwest Florida's ESPN Radio and the play by play announcer for Florida Gulf Coast joined the show Monday to talk about the Eagles run in the NCAA Tournament and he didn’t hold back any punches.
When asked if he thought FGCU could hang with Florida in the Sweet 16 he said “All you have to tell me is what the point total is going to be. I think FGCU is very dangerous if they can get the game to 70 points. In fact of the 15 other teams in the tournament I might take FGCU against at least 10 of them if I know that they can get to 70.”
Moulton said one of things he’s worried about is Florida’s defense but added, “They’re one of the top 10 defensive teams in the country, but you know what? Georgetown was in the top 5 and San Diego State gave up 60 points per game. He added, “I think they’ll be there in the final 10 minutes, and if that’s the case I like their chances, because in every arena they play in from now on it becomes a home game.”
So has it sunk in with the players and Coach Andy Enfield of the run they’ve been on? “I think they know, hey, we’re playing well, this is awesome, this is incredible, we can always look back at this, but you know what next time we lose, we’re done, so let’s not look back too much.”
Moulton said that the Eagles seed is a bit misleading. “They’re more athletic than what we normally see out of a 15, they’re resume was one of a 14 or 15…there skill is probably of a team that would be seeded anywhere from 9 to 12.”
He added that FGCU’s roster is full of players that were rejected by other conferences. “They do play with that chip, so the fact now they get the Gators, the most popular team in this neck of the woods. I mean none of these guys got a sniff from the Gators. They just want to play these 40 minutes because it’s like you didn’t want us huh, because we are going to show you what you didn’t want.”
