Craig Sager of TNT and Turner Sports joined the show Monday to preview the NCAA Tournament.
With NCAA March Madness soon getting underway, Sager is currently in Dayton, Ohio preparing for the First Round "First Four" games which begin tomorrow. He will then move to Kansas City, where Wisconsin takes on Ole Miss in the first round of play. We asked Sager his opinion on the Badgers' competition. He thinks Ole Miss is on an "incredible roll" which has not only benefitted their basketball program, but their football recruiting as well. "I think they got a lot of attention too with their football recruiting team. All those football recruits went to Ole Miss during basketball season, and they saw the team playing well." Sager said at the beginning of the year, nobody thought Ole Miss would be a factor in the SEC. As for their spot in the NCAA tournament Sager added, "It's not a fluke that they're there, but I think it is a major surprise that they won the conference tournament."
What is Sager most excited about in the upcoming tournament? "I like the idea that the Big Ten is strong." He offered up the impressive example that the Big Ten tournament's number 5 seed (Michigan) was ranked number 6 nationally and says this is a testament to the strength of the conference. Being from Northwestern who has never made it to the tournament, Sager has "a lot of respect" for teams like Wisconsin who consistently make it year after year. Although as part of the media, he doesn't root for teams when the games start, Sager says the Big Ten is what he will be watching the closest this year.
Steering away from NCAA, we asked Sager his take on the Miami Heat's 22-game winning streak. He said he can't pick a team that he thinks could end their losing streak. "They're playing better than ever... Nobody's going to beat them."
