Why didn’t the Green Bay Packers get past the San Francisco 49’ers in the Divisional round of the NFL Playoffs in January?? Rhetorical question—it was the team’s poor Defensive play. On the 1st day of Free Agency—what did we see? The Packers are now a serious player for the services of RB Steven Jackson…and might just be in a position on day-2 of Free Agency—to keep WR Greg Jennings. We also saw that Charles Woodson was on his way to visit the 49’ers among others. A great (but aging) Defensive player is leaving via Free Agency—and two “Big Time” offensive players may well be signed by Ted Thompson. Do you see where I am going? As impressive as the Offense is…it could get better, which is great. As far as the Defense… ehh.
The last time TT made a Free Agent “splash” was with Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett…both would later help the Packers win a Super Bowl. A decade earlier the Packers “arrived” by signing Reggie White…who would later help the Packers win a Super Bowl. Just to confirm…these acquisitions didn’t catch passes or rush for 1,200 yards.
By the end of the day… or in the days to come… Green Bay may have done nothing in Free Agency. Jackson could be in Atlanta, and Jennings could be a Viking… or they could both be in Green and Gold. Fans might like the “splash” and Aaron Rodgers could be a very-very happy Quarterback. I would also suggest—Rodgers might be standing on the sideline when another Offense marches down the field for 40+ points in a playoff loss for Green Bay. The NFL’s top rated Offense doesn’t make it to the Super Bowl—again!
More directly—Ted Thompson needs to think about Defense…the Offense is good enough!!
