Brewers' GM Doug Melvin joined the Mike Heller Show yesterday at the annual Dugout Club Winter Baseball Banquet in Madison.
Melvin talked about Corey Hart's injury, and who he expects to replace Hart at first base. "Mat (Gamel) is going to get that opportunity and we will probably play Taylor Greene a little bit." Melvin said that since Gamel didn't play last year during his injury, it will give him an opportunity to prove his ability.
*UPDATE: Hart was scheduled to have surgery today but is seeking a 2nd opinion.
Hart's injury affects the depth of outfield as well, and Melvin named younger players to watch out for. "We are going to get a chance to look at a lot of our younger guys. It's a great opportunity to look at our young guys in the spring."
Melvin also talked about starting pitching as well as the bullpen. "We decided to give our pitchers a chance. In pitching you have to be more patient than anything."
The Brewers have 14 players going to the World Baseball Classic, but Melvin isn't too concerned about injuries. "I do like the competition, I think it tries to grow the game."
