Tyler Dunne of JSOnline joined the show on Tuesday to discuss the Aaron Rodgers contract situation.
Dunne talked about the difficulty of paying players given the current salary cap. “The price just keeps going up with these quarterbacks. As the stars at each position keep getting more money, the salary cap is kind of staying the same.” Dunne said that Packers have some “number-crunching” to do in order to give Rodgers the contract he deserves.
Which players have the highest priory in getting contract extensions? “I would anticipate that Rodgers probably would be the top priority even though he’s got that extra year.
Then you would have to think that Clay Matthews would be next, and then B.J. Raji. I would anticipate it would start with your stud on offense and your stud on defense.”
As for what the Packers are going to do with tight end Jermichael Finley, Dunne said “I think Green Bay has a really tough decision to make here. From a pure football standpoint I think they want him back.” Dunne said that the fact that there aren’t a whole lot of other tight ends available helps Finley. “I think when push comes to shove, they keep the guy because he is still young and he still has his future in front of him.”
Chris Canty and Cullen Jenkins are both possible defensive linemen that could come to the Packers and Dunne said both players are good. “I think both make a lot of sense because it’s what Green Bay needs. They need a bigger defensive end; I think Green Bay is interested because they aren’t going to cost a heck of a lot of money.”
Do the Packers have any chance of signing Greg Jennings? “It’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility. I still think that Greg Jennings is going to be considered an elite receiver by some teams out there and that some team is going to pay him a lot of money.”
