PGA Tour Player Steve Stricker made his weekly appearance on the Golf Affect Radio Show.
What’s your role on the Board of Directors for the PGA Tour?:
“For the board there’s four players…we get direction from the players’ advisory council, which there’s, I don’t know, maybe 20 guys that are voted on by the players. There’s four Board of Directors along with other Board of Directors, guys that are CEOs of other companies that have been asked to be a part of this board over the years. So we just get direction basically from the PAC, Player Advisory Counsel. When there are items to be voted on, we vote. We never ever go against the PAC. Whatever they come up with, the Board of Directors always votes in that direction. It’s interesting you get to hear a lot of the numbers, the money, the behind the scenes of what it costs to run a tour event, to run the PGA Tour itself, TPC Network, we learn about that, there’s a lot of things we learn about. It’s a three year term to be on that board, it’s been interesting, but yet again it takes some time and I’m looking forward to being done for the end of the year.”
What’s the key issue you see ahead that would be a concern that you guys would be looking at for the future of golf?:
“The long putter is at the front of everything right now. We’re kind of in limbo. We’ve made our stance as a Tour as the players, what they saw as the right thing to do which was leave it alone. That was the PGA Tour stance, and now we’ve given that stance to the USGA, Mike Davis and their group, and the R&A, and we are kind of waiting to hear back and what their position is, and how they’re going to move forward. Like I’ve said, we kind of determined we would just like to keep it the way it is. We feel like the…PGA Tour is in a good spot. We still play for a lot of money, the purses have gone up. Our T.V. rating are going up, Tiger is playing well, that always helps, but golf in general is in a bad spot. We see that to change the rule, to change the long putter, to ban it, not only would hurt our product, because we have some high profile players playing with the long putter… we see that as a detriment to our Tour and hurting our product, and we also see that hurting the general overall game.”
